Egypt HIV cases jump six-fold, report says PDF Print

HIV AidsCAIRO, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Cases of the virus that causes AIDS have risen six-fold in Egypt, moving the Arab country toward an HIV epidemic, a government report said.

The number of people reported living with the human immunodeficiency virus in Egypt rose to 3,735 by the end of 2008, a six-fold increase since 1994, the report by the Information and Decision Support Center, the research arm of the Egyptian Cabinet, showed.

Lockheed to sell 24 F-16 fighter jets to Egypt PDF Print

F-16NEW YORK (AFP) – US aerospace giant Lockheed Martin is to sell 24 F-16 jet fighters to Egypt in a 3.2 billion dollar deal, a company spokesman said Tuesday.

"We understand that the governments of the United States and Egypt have reached an agreement over a contract for military sale to provide 24 F-16s to Egypt," Lockheed spokesman Joe Stout told AFP.

Vladimir IsachenkovMOSCOW – Russia's space agency chief said Wednesday a spacecraft may be dispatched to knock a large asteroid off course and reduce the chances of earth impact, even though U.S. scientists say such a scenario is unlikely.

Anatoly Perminov told Golos Rossii radio the space agency would hold a meeting soon to assess a mission to Apophis. He said his agency might eventually invite NASA, the European Space Agency, the Chinese space agency and others to join the project.

TyersTaher Salama, head of Egypt's state-owned Transport and Engineering Company (Trenco) has announced plans to build the biggest car tyre factory in the Middle East at a cost of EGP600m, Reuters has reported. Located in El-Amerya, west of the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria, the new factory will be able to produce half a million tyres annually and will take two years to build. Egyptian, Arab and foreign investors will take part in the factory's financing.

NiqabA government ban on 'Niqab (full face veil) in girls only classrooms of Cairo University in Egypt has kicked off a row with many saying that the veil has nothing to do with Islam.
The ban will weaken the movements by the Muslim minorities in other countries for the right to wear the veil in the name of religious beliefs.

Egyptian authorities have stepped up the controversial campaign against the 'Niqab' with the ban at schools and the university affiliated to Al Azhar (Sunni Islams prestigious seat of learning) and the dormitories of Cairo University, the country's largest public university.
